This article provides an outline workflow for setting up an assessment. It links to articles that provide additional details on those steps. Its starting point is that the Question Set required for the assessment has already been created (Creating Questions and Question Sets) and moderated.
There are 6 key steps involved in creating and scheduling the assessment.
NB: Ensure you have your Question set up on Inspera Production server before following these steps
This guidance is based on using the LTI Integration from Aula. Please note the integration only works with the Inspera Production server (https://coventryassessment.inspera.com/admin#home). If you do not have access to the Production server then please fill in this form: Access Request – Inspera Production Server. If you have issues completing the form, please email the Education Technologists at learningenhance@coventry.ac.uk.
Step 1: Create an assessment using Aula integration
Go to Aula
The integration links on Aula are available through ‘Journey > Assignments’ and ‘Journey > Materials’. Details of the difference between these integration links are provided here.
Depending on the type of assessment you are creating, the steps to follow through will differ. Click on the arrow below to see the steps:
Creating a summative assessment in the ‘Journey > Assignments
- Click on Journey > Assignments > New Assignment
- Select ‘Inspera Test’ and click ‘Next’.
- In the ‘Set up your assignment’ window, enter:
- Title of assessment [ensure you use the specified Naming Convention]
- Enter description [not a required field]
- Enter Open Date and Due Date
- Grades release can be populated but is not a required field; this information is not passed to Inspera
- Set maximum grade as 100 [It is important this is set as 100 to ensure the grade passed from Aula to Universe is weighted correctly]
- Click Save. This will open the Setup screen in Inspera to create your assessment.
See the demonstration here.
Creating a formative assessment in the ‘Journey > Materials’
- Click on Journey > Materials. Create new or edit a page.
- Select the + symbol > Integrations > Inspera.
- This will add an Inspera link into the page on Aula. Add details of the assessment on this page.
See the demonstration here.
Step 2: Run through the Setup page
Ensure all details are entered correctly (Test name, test start/end time, duration, test information)
Select an assessment template from the Template option. Follow Steps 1-5 in this article: Using Inspera Template Options to Prepare an Assessment.
Select Question Set or Create New
Ensure all candidates are pulled through from Aula
If you are unsure which template to use for your assessment, please refer to the assessment categories document which provides a list of examples for each category. Details about the assessment scenarios and their underpinning assumptions are here.

- Section alphanumeric
- Table of contents
- Hide question titles
- Show sections in table of contents

Step 4: Run through the Assessment Settings
Decide how the assessment is to be graded and select the relevant options.
- Selecting ‘Do not use Grade Scale’ will provide students with a score out of the available marks for this assessment. This option is recommended as it simplifies grading.
- Selecting ‘Use grade scale’ will provide options for the following grade scales, thresholds will need to be set:
- pass/fail;
- undergraduate (1st, 2:1, 2:2, 3rd; Fail)
- postgraduate (distinction, merit, pass, fail)
Please be aware that regardless of the choice you make, the marks will be passed back to Aula as a percentage once grading has been confirmed.
Step 5: Check settings and confirm
Once you have completed the steps above, check all settings and add any additional contributors (i.e. Graders)
Step 6: Activate test
Once the test has been checked then it can be activated.
