Introduction

Adobe Firefly is a web-based tool that lets you use AI to generate different types of media (principally images) from a text description. It’s similar to tools such as DALL-E , Microsoft Image Creator and Midjourney. However, Adobe Firefly has some potential advantages:

  • People who aren’t used to writing prompts for generative AI may find Firefly easier to use than other similar products – you can write a simple description of the image you want, and then customise the image by selecting different styles from a sidebar menu, rather than needing to know the correct terms to describe them.
  • Adobe states that it Firefly designed to be safe for commercial use and that the data used to train its models has been collected in a responsible way. See Adobe Firefly – FAQ.

Can I use it?

Staff can use Firefly under the University’s ‘Higher Education Creative Cloud for enterprise’ license. This includes 1,000 Generative AI credits per month. Each image generation (a single generation includes four variations of an image) uses one credit.

Unfortunately, Students are not generally included in the University’s Adobe licence, and so they are not given any generative credits for Firefly.

Select ‘Sign in’ (1) at the top-right. Then, at the bottom of the pop-up box, select ‘Sign in’ under ‘Continue with email’ (2).

On the next page, type your Coventry University email address and select ‘Continue’. Then type your normal Coventry University password.

What can I do with it?

Our license allows us to use Firefly’s ‘Text to image’ tool. This means you write a description of the image you want, and Firefly will use AI to create it.

Unfortunately our license doesn’t currently include Firefly’s other features, such as ‘Text to video’ or ‘Translate audio’.
