CU Group Removal of Mid-Module Assessments and Reusing the Same Grade

Since September 2025, the majority of CU Group courses no longer include mid-module assessments. However, some courses may still retain them. Regardless, the University must ensure that each module component in Universe is accurately assigned its final mark.

However, the university still needs to make sure that each module component in Universe gets the correct final mark.

Instead of manually copying grades (manual work increases the chance of human error) or creating extra assessment items, Aula has explored a way to reuse the same grade from one assessment and automatically apply it to more than one module component. Coventry’s ultimate goal was to enter the grade once in Aula and have it automatically displayed in multiple module components in Universe.

To reduce manual data entry and minimise the risk of human error, Aula has introduced a method to reuse a single assessment grade across multiple module components. This eliminates the need to create additional assessment items. CU Group’s objective is to ensure grades are entered once in Aula and automatically reflected across relevant components in Universe. Aula also aimed to prevent additional workload for teaching staff by allowing a single grade entry to serve multiple purposes.

💡 Implementing Linked Assessments: A Guide

A new ‘Linked Assessments’ feature in the Student Success App will be available to educators when mapping assessments to CU Group’s coursework, components, or assessments.

How it works:

• Educators will continue grading student submissions as usual.
• The current mapping process remains unchanged, educators will map assessments as they always have.
• When the main assessment grade is exported, all linked assessment components will automatically get exported with the same grade in Universe.
• The only difference is that Aula will now allow educators to map one assessment item to another.

📍 Walkthrough

When an educator opens an assessment item (e.g., Coursework 1), they will see a section labeled ‘Linked Assessment Items’. From the dropdown menu, they can select another assessment item, such as Coursework 2. This action links the two items together.

How it works:

• Once a grade is entered and exported for either Coursework 1 or Coursework 2, the same grade will automatically be applied to both items in Universe.
• This ensures consistent results across all linked components, maintaining accuracy and reducing duplication.
• The feature is scalable and can be extended to other Aula spaces if required.

Important Note:

For the export to be successful, the grade type in Aula must exactly match the grade type of the linked component in Universe. If there is a mismatch, the export will fail and an error message will be displayed. In this case, the correct solution is always to align the grade type with Universe. This is what the educator can do:

• Check the grade type of the component in Universe with Registry.
• Update the Aula assignment to match the grade type defined in Universe if they have permission to edit it.

🪭Grade Export: How to Manage Different Scenarios

If students submit multiple components (two assessments):

• Each component in Aula maps to its matching Universe component. Each grade is exported separately. Aula will not combine or convert them. Universe receives one grade per mapped component.

If students have submitted one component/assessment; Universe has one numerical % grade component, and one pass/fail component:

• Aula can only export a grade to a component that has a matching grade type.
• A percentage grade can only be sent to a percentage component.
• A pass-or-fail grade can only be sent to a pass-or-fail component.

Students have submitted one component/assessment; Universe has one numerical/% grade component and one pass/fail component:

• Both Universe components should be in the AULA space

• For the numerical component: Download the CSV file and export as normal

• For the pass/fail component: Convert the numerical marks in the CSV to pass/fail, then export upload (refer to Single Point Assessment import transition for Core & Applied Core Assessment Guide)
